Expand your toolbox and make more distinctive work.

Next session begins May 6th, 2024

Multiple examples and approaches.

Every lesson includes multiple approaches and examples, for a total of thirty variations on the theme, and that doesn’t include the new stuff I think up every time I set a play (research) date!

Make the techniques your own.

I demonstrate each process in detail, sharing tips, best practice approaches to the technique and ideas to expand what I am showing you, so you can play with making it distinctively your own.

In-depth techniques.

  • 16+ lessons released over six weeks

  • PDF notes and appendix

  • Private online community where you can share work and ask questions

  • Three bonus live Q&A sessions with Jane during the workshop

“Absolutely fantastic class created by Jane showing us how to make textures and prints from a wide variety of materials that can be used in our own artwork creations.”

— Jane J.

One aspect of developing this course that really excited me was the return to my roots that it represents.

I have always been first and foremost a surface designer, and experimentation has been at the heart of all the best discoveries I've ever made. The delight that comes with discovering how to get a bubble to print, for example, reminds me that my inner child is always willing and ready to play! I love it when what I teach has that effect on class members – setting the stage for discovery and delight.

Hybrid courses follow a live schedule and are made up of materials such as pre-recorded videos, live lessons and Q&As, PDF’s and presentations that each student can work through at their own speed.

The 16+ lessons include, but are not limited to:

  • Carving eraser stamps

  • Stamps and texture plates made with glue, spackle, masking tape, and caulk

  • Inventive textures from stuff you’re throwing away!

  • India ink dyeing and resisting

  • Reignite your love affair with the gel plate – four techniques you probably haven’t tried yet

  • Understanding acrylic paints and why textile paint is different

  • Caring for tools to make them last

  • Surprising texture from veggie bags, tomato netting and window screen

  • The magic of hand-made papers and gold leaf

  • Reinventing flour paste resist

Every lesson set comes with notes you can download for easy reference.

What students are saying about previous online workshops…

"Loved taking your class, carefully researched, simply presented, loads of content for embellishing. It was well worth the price. I have had a learning curve with this process which was unexpected, I usually pick up stuff quickly but this was on a whole different level for me.”

— Shawn D.

And coming in July…

Six sessions using the techniques learned in the first B&T course, with an emphasis on composition and layering.

Filling up the creative toolbox is fun and the best of all possible play times. In the first Backgrounds and Textures course we did just that! I have three drawers piled with samples and experiments from the course.

But if you’re like me, once the lessons wind down, the question becomes Now What?

Backgrounds and Textures Projects: Complex Compositions is the answer to the “Now What?” question. Our focus will include, but not be limited to:

  • Four distinct approaches for building effective backgrounds

  • Learn how to combine numerous elements into one integrated composition

  • Focal point and radial balance as design strategies

  • Assembling the composition and overprinting it

  • Analyzing colors so that they work together

  • Sizing individual components to contribute the illusion of depth on a flat surface

  • Placement strategies that work within the composition – and why

  • Four ways to use shading and value to add dimension and depth

  • Choosing and creating design elements to build work thematically

  • Finding meaning and telling stories with your work

  • Identifying and sourcing design elements

All lessons are recorded and include downloadable handouts.

A supply list will be provided.

Haven’t taken the first Backgrounds and Textures course? The first course will be offered one more time this spring. Sign up and you’ll be ready when the advanced course begins later this year!
